"The 247 Million Euro Business with Europe's Breakfast Berries" for Der Spiegel, 2021
"The Europeans' hunger for blueberries, strawberries and raspberries has turned Portugal's province into a gold mine for large corporations. Migrant workers and the country's largest national park are suffering from the boom. The berry harvest is a global business. The plants come from companies in the USA or the Netherlands, the harvest workers from Asia . The buyers, on the other hand, are almost exclusively in Central Europe. More than 90 percent of all berries are intended for export.” writes journalist Jan Petter.
In June we spent four days in São Teotónio in Portugal trying to understand life in this drought prone region, that scientists say will be a desert by 2050. My thank you to editor Thomas Lehne, to Jan Petter for his incredible reporting and to all those that shared their stories with us.
